Dhaka-- (UNB) – The government is planning to introduce health insurance for the citizens.

This was revealed yesterday in a meeting of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry with its secretary Sayed Alamgir Farrouk Chowdhury in the chair, said an official handout.

Under the health insurance system, poor patients with health insurance cards will get treatment from any hospital of the country.

The private insurance companies have assured their cooperation in this regard, officials told the meeting.

They said income from the health insurance scheme would be utilized for the treatment of complicated diseases of poor patients.

The meeting decided to prepare a report after reviewing the health insurance programmes of Thailand and the Philippines.

Formulation of policies in shortest possible time for introduction and implementation of health insurance was discussed in the meeting.

Besides, introduction of a new law also came up for discussion, the handout said.

Additional secretary Dhiraj Kumar Nath, two directors general of health and family welfare directorates and representatives from the ministries of establishment, commerce, finance, social welfare, labour and employment, Jeeban Bima Corporation and Delta Life Insurance Company were present.
